Deuteronomy 9:2: ¶ Hear O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan
this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself,
cities great and fenced up to heaven, (KJV)
2 A people great and tall the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest
and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of
Anak! (KJV)
Deuteronomy 1:28; 2:10:
1 Samuel 17:42
Isaiah 40:22
Numbers 13:26-33: 26 ¶ And they went and came to Moses, and to
Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the
wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto
all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
27 And they told him, and said We came unto the land whither thou sentest
us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of
it.
28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the
cities are walled and very great: and moreover we saw the children of
Anak there.
29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and
the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites
dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said Let us go up at
once and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31 But the men that went up with him said We be not able to go up against
the people; for they are stronger than we.
32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched
unto the children of Israel, saying The land, through which we have gone
to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all
the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. {men...: Heb.
men of statures}
33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants:
and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their
sight.
The origin of the Anakims Genesis 6:1-7:
• They are products of rebellion against God’s plan and purpose:
Genesis 6:1-7 1 ¶ And it came to pass, when men began to multiply
on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and
they took them wives of all which they chose
3 ¶ And the LORD said My spirit shall not always strive with man,
for that he also is flesh yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty
years.
4 ¶ There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after
that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they
bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men
of renown.
5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that
every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
{every...: or, the whole imagination: the Hebrew word signifieth not only
the imagination, but also the purposes and desires} {continually: Heb.
every day}
6 ¶ And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and
it grieved him at his heart.
7 And the LORD said I will destroy man whom I have created from the face
of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls
of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. {both...: Heb.
from man unto beast}
• They are very wicked
• They are very strong and formidable
• They appear very intimidating: Deut. 1:28: 28 Whither shall we
go up our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying The people is greater
and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and
moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there. {discouraged: Heb.
melted}
• They were tall: Deut. 2:10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past,
a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakims; cf Gen 14:5; Nu 13:22,33;
De 9:2
Caleb stood before them because:
1. He was a man of courage. Numbers 13:30: “Let us go up at once...”
Courageous words of grace. Numbers 14:6-10.
2. He had another spirit different from the ten. Numbers 14:28.
3. He believed the word of God not the word of the Anakims. The Anakims
speak defeat and frustration which the ten heard. Numbers 13:28,29,31-33.
What you believe is what you receive! Because it is what you also say
Numbers 14:28. What you doubt is what you do without!
4. He never saw himself as a grasshopper before them: we are only as grasshoppers
before Jehovah. Isaiah 40:22: 22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle
of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth
out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell
in {It is...: or, Him that} What you say is what you see!
5. He followed God wholeheartedly. Joshua 14:8.
6. He was a man that knew what it was to be still before the Lord. Numbers
13:30. The still in the spirit always hear from God. “Be still and
know that I am God...I will be exalted in the earth”
7. He never gave up all his life. Joshua 14:6-15.
